Here is what I know about my Rhoads family. I am attempting to tract the
family of Abraham Close HODGE's wives, Rebecca Ann RHOADS & Hannah Catherine
RHOADS. This was an early Mormon family and from records of that time is the
following:

Rebecca Ann Rhoads, born 30 NOV 1806, Selinsgrove, (now) Snyder County,PA
Hannah Catharine Rhoads, born 19 JAN 1814, Union County, PA.

Their parents are listed as Jacob RHOADS & Catharine HAAS. Rebecca came to
Los Angeles with my other apostate relatives and died there in 1887. Her
obit describes her as from "seedling's grove". It is not known what happend
to her sister.

The connecting information to a ROTH/RHOADS family of Selinsgrove I have is
from the book, THE SNYDER COUNTY PIONEERS, by DR. Charles A. Fisher and some
other works by him. This book describes a Jacob RHOADS married to a
Catharine ________, the son of Capt. Franz Wilhem ROTH of Selinsgrove. Other
RHOADS descendants are described. According to Fisher's book Capt. ROTH was
born 1 FEB 1746 probably in Northampton County, PA. There is other
information I will skip.

I have noticed that several separate PA lines derived from the name ROTH.
There is a family tradition that one of these families (Hodge or Rhoads) were
Dutch--but I don't know if they were confused with PA Dutch!

I was hoping to find other branches of this RHOADS/ROTH family to figure out
how Rebecca got up to Cazenovia, NY, where her first child was born in 1832.
They appear to have joined LDS later in Springfield, IL.

There is another early Mormon RHOADS family, from KY I think, that were
instrumental in rescueing the DONNER party. We had another family tradition
about some connection to that which I think is a red herring.

I've done a lot of genealogical research, but not into this line--yet! If
you run into anybody working the Selinsgrove RHOADS/ROTH families please let
the contact me or vice versa. hal eaton. haleaton@aol.com

I am the granddaughter of Aaron Mitchell RHODES (sometimes sp ROADS), who was
b May/Oct 1869, Summerfield, Guilford co NC. Some of his life was spent in
Rockingham co NC, just to the north, and there were rels also in Danville,
Pittsylvania co VA, just north of Rockingham. He drove a team of horses in
his youth, and later in life worked for the railroad for many years as a
fireman, shoveling coal into the engine. His parents had been slaves - mo,
Jenny, and fa, William. There is a white RHODES family living in the
Summerfield area, some of whom owned slaves, and who are also related to
RHODES in the other areas mentioned. Male names of white RHODES are John,
Hezekiah, Samuel, Absolom, William, Eppy, Henry, Abner, Sandford, Thomas,
Paschal, Henry, Noah, Jonathon. Females were Fortune (REEVES), Mary, Sarah,
Elizabeth (APPELL), Emily (SCOTT), Sarah (WITTY), Paulina, Partheny, and
Pamelia (DONNELL). I am just at the point of beginning in-depth research
into these white families to learn which of their slaves each may have Willed
or Deeded away, and to whom. Please let me know if any profiles come in to
you regarding these names/areas .

Hi, happy to meet a Rhoads desc. I am descended from a Sarah Rhoads b. about
1788. somewhere in Kentucky. She married John C. Pierce in Hardin Co, Ky; she
was my 3rd great grandmother. Recently I noticed a file somewhere on your
Daniel Rhoades and that his wife, Eve Faust, died in Nelson Co, Ky which is
in the general vicinity of Hardin Co. Obviously I couldn't help wanting to
connect her to Daniel and Eve's daughter Sarah who was apparently born 04
1789, which is a close enough match for those days! I am holding my breath in
hopes you may be able to confirm this. My Sarah is listed as Sarah A. Rhoads.
Of course am hoping for the best, but still pleased to meet any other Rhoads
desc from that area. They seem to be scarce in Ky, so I guess that adds fuel
to my hope that this is the right family. Diana

5. RONTNS

My Rhodes line is: Ronald G Stimmel, Galen, Lillian Campbell, Zebuline
Clarissa Rhodes, Asa Waterhouse, Joseph, John. In THE RHODES FAMILY IN
AMERICA, by Howard Jacklin Rhodes, the author speculates that the progenitor
of the Rhodes settlers in Massachusetts may have been the Roads who was a
navigator with Cabot.

According to Howard Jacklin Rhodes, in THE RHODES FAMILY IN AMERICA, John D
Rhodes and family, including son John, joined a wagon train from Great
Barrington MA in 1814, pausing in Lenox, Madison Co, & Sherburne, Chenango Co
NY. They reached The CT Western Reserve in OH Aug 1815. Asa Waterhouse Rhodes
was born 14 Feb 1802 in Great Barrington MA. He married Sarah "Sally"
Applegate Mar 1822 at Fowler, Trumbull Co OH. Zebuline Clarinda Rhodes was
born 16 Sep 1844 in Delhi Tp, Hamilton Co OH and died 1903 in Auglaize Co OH;
she married John Wallace Campbell in Auglaize Co about 1862. My Grandmother
Lillian Campbell, the second of 13 children, was born 3 Sep 1866 in Auglaize
Co.

6. DF GRIFF

Unfortunately, I didn't learn about the reunion until the 24th, but is there
any way I can receive a copy of the reunion. My husband is Dale Griffin, son
of Virgil Griffin, son of Gertrude Rhodes Griffin, daughter of Charles
Lincoln Rhodes, son of Samuel Amos Rhodes(Elizabeth Tanner), son of
Rev.Ebenezer Rhodes. Are you related in any way? Gertrude, Charles were
both born in Iowa, and my impression is that there are still relatives
there?? Please email me. If we are related, I have scads of info. on our
Rhodes family. Looking forward to hearing from you.

7. PARSONSCR

You asked about connection with Rhoads/Rhodes name. I'm new at this Roots
stuff, so I don't have data reaching way back, but---

My maternal great grandfather was named Benjamin Franklin Rhoads, born July
15, 1838 in Mahoning County, Ohio. He had 2 enlistments in Ohio Vol. in
Civil War, admitted to Ohio Soldiers & Sailors Home in Sandusky on 9/21/1907,
died there on 6/6/1909, also buried there. He married Emma Hammer on
12/29/1868 in Wayne County, Ohio, probably town of Wooster. Five children;
Charles E. (my grandfather) b. 3/6/1870; Lenore Rhoads/Hammond; Harriet
Rhoads/Hunt; Mary Ann Rhoads (not married); and Grace Rhoads/Rice/Flinn.
Charles married Katharina Baumann (b. 1/27/1870 in Switzerland) in
Marshallville Ohio ; 7 children--Herman, Carl, Willard, Roy, Frances (my
mother), Hazel, and Esther. Benjamin Franklin's records show spelling as
both Rhoads and Rhodes, thus children have used either. I am in process of
getting his death certificate, and hope his parents are listed, otherwise I'm
lost on
knowing names of parents. Also don't know siblings. Maybe you can find a
connection.
Many months ago I sent to you my oldest Rhodes, my ggf Benjamin Franklin Rhodes
(aka Rhoads) b.15 Jul 1838 d.6 Jun 1909. I recently located his Father, my gggf
Henry Rhodes b.9 Apr 1796 d 5 Oct 1876, and his wife Sarah b. 18 Sep 1801
d. 5 Nov 1874. Both are buried in the Greenlawn Cemetery in Greenford,
Mahoning County, Ohio, now under the supervision of the Greenford Evangelical
Lutheran Church. Both Henry and Sarah were born in Pennsylvania (per census documents)
and possibly in Berks County. Although specific relationships have not been
determined for names other than Henry's immediate family, various other
"Rhodes" are buried in the several cemeterys in Greenford, Ohio.

The Soloman Rhoads that you mention, are you aware of where he is buried.
All of this movement to Kentucky is of interest to me, because my family
originated from an area near the Daniel Boone Homestead, and in the Boone
museum there is a Rhoads Family bible that belonged to a Soloman Rhoads.

All I know at the moment is that my grandfather lies buried in Galax, Va. He
is survived by his wife Mrs. Gladys Hunley Rhodes. His name was Posey. He
died in 1972 at the age of 72. He had some sisters which I never really
knew, but some of the names are Vera, Eva, and Ida. I want to say that I
remember my grandmother telling me that my grandfather's father is Harry, and
that his father's name is Henry, but I'm not quite sure about it all. I am
wandering whether or not Aunt Eva was named after the one you mentioned, or
maybe she is even the same person. I am also, as I've previouly mentioned to
you, very curious, because I think that part of my family may have come from
MD. The only ones I know for sure came from Bassett Co. Virginia. Please
keep in touch.

Thanks,
David F. Rhodes

I will list the step of my family migration from most recent to the earliest.
The Rhoades' in my family currently reside in East Texas. Serveral in Mt.
Vernon, Winnsoboro, and Sulphur Springs. This is Franklin, Wood, and Hopkins
counties respectively. They traveled to Texas from Washington, Indiana in
the mid 1800's. I cannot remember my Great-Great-Great Grand-fathers name
but one of his sons name Jim is the one who came to Texas. Jim's father was
married to an Indian woman and they died on their way to Texas and are buried
somewhere in Arkansas. It is my understanding that Jim's Grand parents or
great Grand-parents came from Kentucky. The Rhoades that came to Kentucky
migrated from Georgia. Theses Rhoades came from either Florida or one of the
New England area states. I have talked to my father who has informed me that
my decendants are the one that Rhode Island was named after. I take this
with a grain of salt because most Rhoades reguardless how they spell their
name probably make this claim.

Although, I spell my name Rhoades, my name was ariginally spelled Rhodes.
The story goes that one of my great grand mothers had two sons and named them
both with the same name. These two men grew up and lived in the same area.
The mail deliverer didn't know whose mail was whoms so my direct lineage
added the 'a' to his name.

I hope this helps.

I have a Great-Aunt who lives in Sulphur Springs, Tx on College Street. My
Uncle past away this past Janurary. While he was alive and able he and his
wife traveled across the US tracking down our lineage. Anyone interested in
the volumes of books my Aunt has please let me know. I will talk to my Aunt
and see if I can my copies.

I noticed that you had a Rhoads in Pennsylvania. I have been told that
many Rhoads families there were Quakers. Here is what I know about a New
York branch of the Rhoads family. The spelling of Rhoads, Rhoades, Rhodes,
etc. was often mixed up before dictionaries in the early 1800s and even much
later.
My group is decended from a Rhoads group that came over from England on
the Susan B. Constant ship in the early 1600s. There was an Isaac Rhoads,
Sr. who fought in the Revolution for the Dutchess County Militia in New York
and an Anthony Rhoads probably from White Plains or Elbridge, New York about
the time of the Revolution. Chances are that if there is a Rhoads listed in
New York before 1800 it is likely a relative of my group. My grandfather
Burton Wells Rhoads (1871 to 1948) was originally from New York but married a
Clark from Frederickburg, Va. and there were several Rhoads families in
Richmond, Va. area. My immediate family is all from the western Chicago
suburbs since about 1904.

18. KAR2000

Dear Mr. Rhodes,
I read the e-mail that you sent and became very interested. We have a
copy of our family tree and I checked to see if any of the names you gave fit
with those of our ancestors -- unfortunetely they did not. However, I hope
that one of the other on-line Rhoads that you found may be linked to my
family's history.
I am the daughter of Charles Lawrie Rhoads and Elizabeth Plesa. The
other Rhoads that we have listed on the family tree in chronological order
are: Evan Lawrie Rhoads (b.1922), Robert Rockhill Rhoads (b.1925), Evan
Lawrie Rhoads (b.1900), Samuel Nicholson Rhoads (1862-1952) of Philidelphia,
Charles Rhoads (1828-1903), Joseph Rhoads (b.1789), Joseph Rhoads
(1784-1809)) of Marple Pennsylvania, James Rhoads (1722-1778), Joseph Rhoads
(1680-1732), John Rodes (d.1701) of Derbyshire, and finally Sir Francis
Rodes. Our ancestry can also be traced to the well-known Sir Francis Bacon
and Alfred the Great of England.

19. dustyr@skyhigh.com (Mike Rhoads)

Thank you for the information on your branch of the Rhodes family.
You probably know that the original Rhodes,Rhoads, Rhoades name came from
England.
My research started in Williamsport, Pa. with my great, great grandfather
(William Rhoads ) who came to the area from Hatboro, Pa. in 1857.
I've identified all my relatives in the Williamsport area, but have not been
able to trace any other Rhoads from William when he lived in the Hatboro
area. He was a farmer and a cabinet worker.
There are a lot of Rhoads branches in the Philadelphia area - it's hard to
tie them all together.
I hope you've heard from others.

Mike Rhoads (DUSTYAR)

I've recently dicovered I have Rhodes in my family line. I would very much be
interested in hearing whether you have a connection to mine. My Rhodes
connection is through Pleasant Marion Rhodes, b. abt 1840 in IL, who lived in
Madison Co., IA.
He married my great great grandaunt Mary E. Clark. 04 Apr. 1861 in Madison
Co.

I am attaching a file with the family group sheet in question. I know there
were a number of other Rhodes also living in the area in Madison Co. at the
same time, and suspect they are related to my Pleasant Marion Rhodes, but at
this point I cannot prove any other relationship. Love to hear from you!

I would like to make contact with someone researching the following family.
They are on the 1870 Butler Co. MO census (Although they were in Indiana in
1860)

Lewis Rhoads born ca 1823 in KY
Nancy Rhoads born ca 1824 in KY
Rachel " born ca 1839 IN
Emily " born ca 1840 IN
Sarah " born ca 1843 IN
Elizabeth " born ca 1846 IN
Lewis F " born ca 1848 IN
Nancy E " born ca 1850 IN
Mary Ann Bailey born ca 1834 IN
Araminta Bailey born March 1860 IN

In Indiana, Mary Ann (Rhoads) Bailey was living in her parents household
with her husband James Bailey (39) and step-son James Bailey (9) but they
evidently didn't make the move to Missouri.
Araminta Bailey married in Poplar Bluff Missouri to one John Riley Hicks (1879).
They lived there for a while, then in Arkansas and Nebraska before returning
to Indiana where they finished raising their family.

Any help will be appreciated. I have most of John and Araminta's history
and would be willing to share information. E-mail me at smckim@venus.net

While I'm not a direct Rhodes descendant, my family has married into the
Rhodes family and one of my relatives is researching them. She has taken it
back as far as Samuel P. Rhodes (?-1872) who married Mary Vandegrift. Their
children were Bessie Evans, George Server, Charles, and Thomas. I know
George S. Rhodes was a native of Philadelphia, moved to New York to work in
a customs house and later moved to Washington, D. C. This is the branch I'm
related to and familiar with. If I can be of help, please let me know. I've
made copies of your on-line dates. If it works out for me I may join you
sometime.

Have learned that my gggfather was Elisha Jefferson Rhoades and he
was half Choctaw. His mother was a LeFlor; he had three wives with
children.

24. 75627.311@Compuserve.com (Al & Martha Rhods)

To start, I have Jacob Rhodes dieing 2 March vs. 2 May 1857. This could be
caused
by reading a gravestone. The marriage to Elizabeth Ripple happened in
Muhlenburg County and was recorded as 16 July 1808., this could have been the
date of the license and the marriage on the 23rd, but unlikely a year later.
For some reason I have her birth as 29 August vs. Sep. and death as 29 Sep
vs.
19 Sep. Again maybe a misreading of the marker.

Daughter Eve Elizabeth married John Foster vs. Forster.

The births of Barsheba and the later children could not have been in Edgar
County. 1. Edgar County was not formed until much later, I think about 1823.
2. This area was not open to much settlement as early as 1814-1817.

I have "Talbert" vs. "Tolbert" no idea which is correct. I have a
marriage
record that says he married 7 June vs. 10 June, but this could be the
difference
in the return date. For Miriam I had a birth date of 3 May 1815 in Bath
County,
Ky and died 2 Dec. 1890 vs. 1996.

The only children I knew about was Gideon, so am happy to find out about
the
others.

Do you have a reference on the second marriage of Gideon?

#7 Joseph the statement from ( M 11 Feb 1880,... applies to Joseph's son
John He was the one who married Rhoda Emmadine Pine on 11 Feb. 1880.

Thank you for thinking of me. I will make an effort to check for
marriage,
etc. records for Edgar County while in Salt Lake, maybe it will answer the
question about some of these dates.

Hi My name is Pam Rhoads. I'm not really sure what you need for a
family history or tree but mine should be very easy. My family is
extremely small.
My name is Pamela Ann Rhoads. I was born 12-9-55 in Reading PA.
I have one sister, Sherrie Dianne (Rhoads) Zabinski born 7-16-53.
I think my Paternal grandfather was named Walter Rhoads but I'm not sure.
If there is anyone else out there connected to me I sure would like to
know it.

Thanks

Please put me on the list for a log in case I get called out of town.
I do have big news. I found the elusive Owen P Rhoads b.1815 on the
internet! There are scads of Rhoads on a home page of one Raymond Maris.
http://www.hi-tech.net/maris/maris.htm
These Rhoads appear to have been Quakers from the Philadelphia area.
Mr. Maris has about four generations of Rhoads but his Rhoads info
ends with a James Rhoads who married an Elizabeth Owen who was born in 1724
Thanks again and keep me posted. (You are welcome to contribute the
information above to the reunion if I can't make it.)

My name is Govoni, and I was on line in the Southern gen. forum this
afternoon. Someone there told me you were a RHODES, and I thought I'd write
to see if you might know anything of the RHODES we are researching ...

We currently live south of Boston, Massachusetts.

My husband's mother is Aletha Dorothy RHODES, bor in 1925 in Emory, TX.

Her parents were Lula Mae NOYES and Charles Franklin RHODES. Charles was b.
in Emory in 1893. Lula was born in McKinney about 1902.

Charles' father was Alonzo RHODES, born in 1871 in Wood County, TX. Alonzo's
siblings were E. Rhodes (b. 18640; Robert Rhodes (b. 1874) and J. Rhodes (b.
1877).

Alonzo's father was Charles RHODES, born in 1830 in what is now TX. Alonzo's
mother was Mary A. ?.

Charles RHODES parents names' are what we are searching for .... ? RHODES and
?? were both born in what is now Alabama in prob. the early 1800's. We have
found a few RHODES on census indices for AL for 1810-1840, and are trying to
find a way to view the corresponding microfilms, which are not on file at the
Mass. State Archives ... We do show a Thomas RHODES in AL in Cherokee lands
in 1830, and then a Thomas RHODES in Freedom County, TX in the 1840 census
... we are thinking this may be him ... there were so few RHODES in either of
those census indices ... hopefully we can figure out which AL Rhodes was his
...

Do you know of a RHODES newsletter based in AL? A kind person on line sent
it to me, but I lost it ... (by it, I mean the address, cost, etc.)

Do you know the addresses of any historical societies in AL or TX that might
be able to help us out?

Hopefully we'll get this figured out one day!

Where were your RHODES from?

Warm regards,

Betty Govoni
Taunton, MA
