We are looking for Cecil Rodman (aka Charles Cecil) Rhodes b. Nov 15 abt
1898. In Winnipeg, Canada. We were told his parents were visiting there.
m. Dorothy M. Holler (nee Fogelsonger) in Elkton, Md. between 1930/36.
We feel he may have had relatives there, as Dorothy was from Shippensburg,
Pa. b. 1903 He was listed as a steam fitter and my husband remembers
that he worked at the ship yard in DC (where they lived).
He also had a mother and sister in DC. The mother was known as Grandma
Britton to the boys ( a possible remarriage) and the sister was Marion.

Abt 1961 one of the boys got a call from Marion saying that Cecil was dying,
but due to military commitments they could not make it to see him. It is
believed he was in DC or Va. at the time. The three boys are: 1) Rodney C.
b. 1936 2) Douglas Lee b. 1942 and 3) Michael Edward b. 1944

I have another RHODES line that I am researching that is from
Edmonson County, Ky. I have not found a connection to the Henry / Daniel
RHODES of Muhlenberg County. He is Daniel RHODES and my notes for him are:

In the "Pennsylvania Archives," 5th Series, Volume 4 it had a listing of
"depreciation pay" for the "Continental Line" including Michael and Nicholas
ROOF and Peter ROUF, all privates. A Daniel and Gabriel RHOADS, privates,
were listed as well. The page giving the county name was NOT provided.

In "The 1795 Census of Kentucky" by T.L.C. Genealogy it had 11 or so RHODES
including a Daniel Jr. and a Daniel Sr. RHODES listed in Logan County, Kentucky.

On the 1820 marriage bond of his daughter Ruby's he was Daniel RHODES.

In the 1900 census John R. ROOF listed the POB of his mother (Ruby RHODES
ROOF) as Rhode Island.

In "Edmonson County Flashlights In Folklore" by Charles E. WHITTLE it had on
page 71 it had "The main chain of settlements, however, ranged along the
hills overlooking the River.... Mastin ELMORE kept a ferry at the Betty
Rock; and below him lived the RHOADS'." It went on to say "... and still
others, including the RHOADS', had meandered up Green River from the lower
settlements."

In the 1830 Edmonson Co., Ky. census he was Daniel RHODES with the following
living in his household: males 1 between 15 & 20, 1 between 20 & 30, 1
between 50 & 60; females 1 between 10 & 15, 1 between 15 & 20, and 1 between
50 & 60.

In "Pioneer Baptist Church Records of South-Central Kentucky and the Upper
Cumberland of Tennessee 1799-1899" it had on page 331 the History of Beaver
Dam Baptist Church (Edmonson County, Kentucky). It had Daniel RHODES as
first appearing in the list of members in July 1833. On page 312 Daniel
RHODES was listed as a messenger in 1831 of the Holly Springs Baptist
Church. On page 265 Daniel RHODES was listed as a messenger in 1843, 1844,
1845, 1846 and 1847 of the Ivy Baptist Church in Warren County, Kentucky. On
page 88 it said "...Daniel RHODES were well known ministers in this church,
..." Doughty's Creek Baptist Church (Barren County, Kentucky). In 1849 Elder
D. RHODES and in 1851 Daniel RHODES were messengers of the church.

In "Edmonson County, Kentucky Cemeteries" Vol. 1 there is a "Daniel RHODES
Feb. 6, 1774 Nov. 22, 1850" buried next to "Elizabeth RHODES Aug. 21, 1773
Jul 30, 1835" in the LUTTRELL cemetery.

His headstone in the LUTTRELL cemetery read "Daniel RHODES, born Feb 6, 1771
(?), Died Nov. 22, 1850." It had S.C. RHODES written at the bottom of his
and his wife's headstone.

In "Lincoln County, Kentucky Records" Volume 1, by Michael Cook it had the
death records of Hardin County, Kentucky. Included were:
"BUSH, Elizabeth - aged 75; married; d. Aug. 15, 1885 of flux; b. Maryland;
parents Daniel and Elizabeth RHODES."

In "Kentucky Genealogy and Biography" Vol. 1 it said that "Ruby RHODES, a
daughter of Daniel and Elizabeth RHODES."

In a summer 1983 query in the "Ancestral News" (Vol. 8, #3) it read:
"RHOADES - ROOF - Which Daniel RHOADES was the father of Rhueby (Ruby)
RHODES that married Nicholas A. ROOF, 1 Mar 1820 in Hardin Co., Ky? #729,
Norma F. BROWN, 110 Raisor Ave., R-4, Bardstown, Ky. 40004."

In the file is a family group sheet for a Malinda RHODES who was noted as
being born in New York in 1816 and married Levi EDWARDS in Edmonson County
in 1828.

17A. jgjewe01@homer.louisville.edu (Jeffrey Jewell)

My Elias RHODES notes are:
In the 1861 will of their father's, John, Elias and Frank RHODES received
land or slaves while the children of his deceased daughter Elizabeth HENNING
received cash. See their father's file for the will.

In "Breckinridge County, Kentucky Records", Volume 2, by COOK it had a
listing "November 9, 1867 - Eli RHODES, 39, farmer, (father b. Virginia,
mother b. Maryland), to Columbia A. MATTINGLY, no age given, (father and
mother b. Kentucky); Henry Clifton MATTINGLY, bondsman; no date or place of
marriage."

In "Breckinridge County, Kentucky Records", Volume 4, by COOK it had: "Will
Book No. 1 p. 504 Elias RHODES. Wife, Columbia RHODES; two children,
Margaret C. RHODES and Mary A. RHODES. Executrix, wife Columbia RHODES.
Witnessed by J.G. CARTER and John LYDDAN. Written November 10, 1887,
probated November 21, 1887."

In "Kentucky Genealogy and Biography, Volume I" by BATTLE, PERRIN & KNIFFIN
it read on page 152 for Breckinridge County, Kentucky...: "Elias RHODES was
born in Breckinridge County, April 3, 1828, and is the son
of Elias and Margaret (MATTINGLY) RHODES, natives of Virginia and Maryland,
respectively. His father was born in Loudon County, Va., in 1781, and was
brought to Kentucky when but ten years of age, the family settling in what
is now Washington County, where he remained until 1801, at which time he
came to the southern part of Breckinridge, being one of the pioneers of that
section of the county. He was a farmer by occupation, and died in November,
1868. Subject's maternal grandfather, Richard MATTINGLY, moved from Maryland
to Kentucky about the beginning of the present century, settling in
Washington County, where he remained a short time, afterward moving to
Breckinridge, where his death occurred about 1830. Margaret MATTINGLY RHODES
was born in 1782, and departed this life in Breckinridge County, in 1869.
Twelve children were born to Mr. and Mrs. RHODES: Ellen, Richard, Nancy,
Mary, John, Elizabeth, Thomas, Winifred, Francis, Teresa, Elias and Agnes.
The subject of this sketch remained with his parents until their death,
growning to manhood in Breckinridge County, where he has since resided. He
was reared to agricultural pursuits, and at the age of twenty-five purchased
a farm in the southern part of the county, and later, in 1868, bought his
present home place in Bewleyville District, to which he moved in 1870. Mr.
RHODES' farm is a model in every respect, consisting of 400 acres of fine
"barren" land, well improved and under successful cultivation. As a farmer
and stock raiser Mr. RHODES has been more than ordinarily successful, while
as a moral and upright citizen he stands high in the community in which he
resides. He was married, November 11, 1867, in Breckinridge County, to Miss
Columbia MATTINGLY, daughter of James L. and Matilda (COOMES) MATTINGLY, the
parents natives of Maryland and Virginia. Two children have been born to Mr.
and Mrs. RHODES, viz.: Margaret C. and Mary A. Mr. RHODES is a warm friend
of education, and
takes an active part in all movements for the moral and religious welfare of
the community. He is a conservative politician, voting for the man rather
than the party, and with his family belongs to the Catholic Church, being a
member of the congregation of the Guardian Angels, known as Mt. Merino Church."

In "Breckinridge County Cemeteries, Volume I" on page 376 it had: Mount
Merino Cemetery RHODES, Elias 04/03/1828 11/11/1887 H of Columbia.

In "History and Legend of Breckinridge County, Kentucky" by Bill THOMPSON it
had on page 90:
"History of Catholicism In 1791, Leonard WHEATLY with his wife, Ann, and
their two children, Sarah and James, came to Breckinridge County, and
settled 12 miles south of Hardinsburg. They came from London County,
Virginia. Later they had six more children: Thomas, Mary, Wilfred, John,
George, and Arthur. The WHEATLEY family was the first Catholic family to
enter Breckinridge County and Thomas, the third son of Leonard and Ann
WHEATLEY, was the first Catholic child born in our county. Richard
MATTINGLY was born in Maryland in 1756, and moved to Breckinridge County in
1791. He settled on Long Lick Creek, at present known as the MATTINGLY
Settlement. He had nine children: John, Margaret, Zacharia, Edward, William,
Thomas, Mary, Elizabeth, and Sarah. The first marriage performed by any
minister in Breckinridge County and recorded in the clerk's office, is that
of John, the oldest son of Richard MATTINGLY with Sarah WHEATLEY, daughter
of Leonard WHEATLEY. They were married in the Catholic Church by Rev.
Stephen Theodore BADIN, Feb. 18, 1805. Vachel HINTON, also a Catholic,
came to Breckinridge County with Mr. MATTINGLY in 1791, and settled in the
Axtel area. Mr. HINTON lived to be over 100 years old. Mr. HINTON's fourth
daughter is known in the church history as Sister Gabriella, of the Loretta
Society. In 1795, Elias RHODES migrated from Maryland to Breckinridge
County and settled on Long Lick Creek. Ignatius COOMES came to Breckinridge
County in 1800. He married Sarah Stuart LEWIS, a widow, who had four
children. William and Thomas LEWIS became prominent citizens of our county.
Her two daughters married their step-father's brothers: Joshua and Henry
COOMES.... On June 1, 1807, Elias RHODES married Margaret MATTINGLY. This
ceremony was performed by Father BADIN and took place in the open air in the
presence of a great crowd of spectators who had come from miles around. Mr.
MATTINGLY's house was used for the church services in the neighborhood until
1812, at which time Father NERINCKX built the Long Lick Catholic Church. The
children born to Elias RHODES were Ellen, Richard, Nancy, John, Thomas,
Francis, Winifred (Sister Macaria of the Loretta Society), Eli, and Agnes.
Richard and Nancy died in infancy and were the first two to be buried in the
St. Romuald Cemetery in Hardinsburg..... Bishop FLAGET first visited the
county in 1814. There he met Mr. Elias RHODES whose physique and facial
features were identical to his. Indeed they looked like identical twins.
The infant child of Elias RHODES was the first ssed of the General
Resurrection planted in the Catholic Cemetery at Hardinsburg. On this burial
occasion Father NERINCKX said, "It is a happy circumstance when the ground
intended for Christian burial is first broken for the reception of an
innocent child..... The first Catholic priest to visit Breckinridge County
was Father BADIN, probably in 1798. The church station in the county was
Richard MATTINGLY's on Long Lick Creek..... These five churches have been in
continous use since having been built and have served the people in
Breckinridge County, well, since Father BADIN, "The Pioneer Priest," held
his first service in Mr. Richard MATTINGLY's home in 1797."

In "Catholicity in Kentucky", Chapter IX, "Breckinridge County Settlement"
page 142 "... The children born to Elias RHODES were: Ellen, Richard, Nancy,
John, Thomas, Francis, Winfred (Sister Macaria of the Loretto society), Ely
and Agnes. The latter, as also Richard and Nancy, died in infancy, and the
two last named were the first that received interment in the Catholic
cemetery attached to the church of St. Romuald, in Hardinsburg."

In the "RHODES Book" by Sister Mary Carl it had: p. 1 "12. Elias (Ely) Apr.
3, 1828 Columbia MATTINGLY."

I have Bowman's who went to IN from VA/WV in the late 1820's. I haven't
been able to connect them to the Brethren but suspect that the may have
been.
I have the following information:
* BOWMAN, THOMAS b~1769 in South Branch of the Potomac River area
BOWMAN, THOMAS (adult) 1787 Tax List-Berkley Co. VA
* RHOADS/RHODES etc., JANE b~1769 in South Branch of the Potomac River
area (married Thomas Bowman)
BOMAN, CHARLES 1774- Dunmore's War on Capt. M. Cresap's militia payroll
list
BOWMAN, CHARLES 1782 Tax List-now Hampshire Co?-compiled by M. Cresap
RHODES, JOHN (ditto above)
RHODES, THOMAS (ditto above)
ROAD, CHARLES 1757-saddler in Capt. Robert Stewart's Co. VA Regiment
ROAD, JOHN 1774-Dunmore's War on Capt. Joseph Mitchell's militia payroll

ROADS, ANDREW 1774-Dunmore's War on Maj.J.Connolly/Capt.G.Astor's rolls
RHODES, JACOB (ditto above)
ROADS, HENRY ??date??- a ranger-Rev War Public Service Claim-VA
ROADS, JOHN 1746-fined 3 Sept on complaint by Capt. Peter Shoul
* BOWMAN, CHARLES b~1797 son of Thomas and Jane Rhodes

Only the * names are definitely my ancestors, the others are possible
connections. I suspect that the Charles Bo(w)man associated with Michael
Cresap may have been the father or uncle of my 5G Grandfather Thomas Bowman.

Thomas Bowman and son(s) were boat builders in the Wheeling WV area
on the 1820 US Census. They moved to the Vermillion Co. IN /Vermilion Co. IL
area in the late 1820's along with several inter-related families: Morgan,
Cochran and Prickett and others.

Thomas and Jane Bowman had the following children:

CHARLES b~1797/1798 who married CATHERINE COCHRAN on23May1816 in
Tyler Co. WV; they had the following children:

JANE b~1817, married PETER WELLS 12Nov1833 in Vermillion Co. IN;

DRUSILLA b~1820 in VA/WV, married GEORGE W. NOLAN on 18Sep1843 in

Vermillion Co. IN,they were my 3G Grandparents. Drusilla died
24Nov1874 in
Guthrie Co. IA, George died 1881 in Cerro Gordo Co. IA.

EMILY (EMELINE?) md JACOB BRADBURN

CASSANDER md EHUD HUGHES

TEMPERANCE md WILLIAM K. MARTIN

STEPHEN FRANKLIN BOWMAN md SARAH McGEE

CHARLES WESLY BOWMAN md SARAH?

NANCY md ?? UNDERHILL

THOMAS BENTON BOWMAN md ADELIA ?

Charles and Catherine Bowman and family, including several married
children, moved to Allamakee Co. IA in 1849. Catherine died in 1853 and is
buried in Minert Cemetary, Allamakee Co. IA.
Charles remaried a LUCINDA ? b~1817 and they had JOHN born~1856, MARY
b~1858, ROSETTA b~1860.

Charles Bowman died in 1871 in Allamakee Co. IA . I have a copy of his
will.

Other children of Thomas and Jane Bowman :

possibly JOHN but no other info known yet;

MOSES: b1812 in Wheeling, WV md 1)Nancy Miller 2) Mrs. Sally (Gadbury)Warner
in Vermillion Co. IN, died 23Mar1891. Children of Moses and Nancy Miller
Bowman: Thomas, Alice, Ellen, Catherine, George,John, Mary and Cornelius.

MARIA : married STEPHEN BAINBRIGE 22Aug1839 in Vermillion Co. IN;

and probably other unknown children of Thomas and Jane.

Thomas and Jane Bowman's son Charles married Catherine Cochran and I
think that her family were Methodists at that time. Charles and Catherine's
son Stephen Franklin obit says that he and his wife Sarah converted to the
United Brethren Church 3 years after their marriage (~1858) then eventually
united with the Methodist Church. Stephen Franklin Bowman was the brother of
my 3G Grandmother Drusilla Bowman Nolan.
The bio of Moses Bowman states that his father Charles is of German
ancestry, I do not know if that comes from Thomas Bowman's side or Jane
Rhoads' side. Also, Thomas was said to have "served as a loyal defender of
the colonial interests in the Revolutionary War".

I also have some info on a BOWMAN that I haven't tied to mine yet but
suspect that the may be related. This was sent to me because Jackson Co.
Iowa borders Allamakee Co. Iowa.

From "History of Jackson Co. Iowa 1989":
'JACOB BOWMAN b 14Nov1798 at Mt. Clinton, VA son of PETER and MARY
HEATWOLE BOWMAN. Peter Bowman's father JACOB BOWMAN was the first settler in
Bucks Co. PA. Jacob Bowman's father WENDELL BOWMAN was the first settler in
Lancaster Co. PA, having migrated from Switzerland in 1707, a member of the
Mennonite Pequot Creek Settlement.
Jacob Bowman (the 2nd) married ELIZABETH KEISTER 30Nov1823 at
Franklin, VA. She was the daughter of GEORGE and SUSAN PECK KEISTER and
grandaughter of FREDRICK and HANNAH DYER KEISTER.
Jacob and Elizabeth had 14 children, 11 of which migrated to Jackson
Co. IA with their parents in 1851. They came from Mt. Clinton to Parkersberg
VA on the Ohio River and from there down the Ohio to the Mississippi, then
north to Jackson Co. IA.
The children of Jacob and Elizabeth:
GEORGE WASHINGTON; JACOB KEISTER; WILLIAM MALCOM; BENJAMIN FRANKLIN; STEPHEN
HAMILTON; SUSAN (LARY); MARY FRANCES (KENDALL); SARAH (DEAN) ; HANNAH
(RATHBURN); NANCY (SIMS); ELIZABETH (SIMS); and POLLY, JOHN and an infant
who died.

Also, I found the following on the Brethren Church homepage:
"Baptismsperformed by ElderAlexander Mack: 1767 August 16, Jacob Bauman
and Maria Bauman, his wife. "Also, a "Catherine Bauman" was baptised with no
indication of relation.

The pioneer Jost Hite had a son-in-law named George Bauman/Bowman.
They were in VA before 1769 and I can't tie that line to mine either. It
seems like the sons of George migrated further afield. Does anyone know of a
source for info on the descendants of Jost Hite & George Bauman/Bowman?
I am trying to find the parents of Thomas Bowman and his wife Jane
Rhoads/Rhodes etc. who were born near the South Branch of the Potomac River
in ~1769, and any info would be appreciated. Even if it only looks remotely
like there may be a connection, please let me know. Sometimes it is just
the naming patterns that help make the "vital clue". It has just been the
last 6 months or so that I have made the connection from my 3G Grandmother
Drusilla Bowman Nolan to her parents Charles and Catherine Cochran Bowman and
her grandparents Thomas and Jane Rhoads Bowman. This came about by finding
similar naming patterns and then tracking down Charles' will and finding
bio's in various places. Several distant cousins had been using the wrong
names for Drusilla Bowman Nolan's parents for 20 to 30 years and therefore
were not getting anywhere!

Thank you all for reading all of this rather lengthy letter. Susan

I am researching the following Rhodes family:

Alexander "Alex" Rhodes [b. Feb. 25, 1858, in FL (thought to be in or near
Tallahassee, FL); died March 13, 1938; buried Union Grove Cemetery, Paris,
Lamar Co., TX]. Names of parents unknown.

Alex had an older sister named Sarah who had a peg leg, and family oral
history states that Sarah was instrumental in rearing Alex because their
father was killed in the Civil War while serving as a confed. soldier.

In about 1883, Alex Rhodes was in central Texas near Waco when he married
Nancy Wright (b. Feb. 2, 1867; d. April 1, 1934; buried in Union Grove Cem.,
Paris, Lamar Co., TX).

Their children included the following:
Julia (Rhodes) Moore Camp
Ada (Rhodes) Broadway
Mary Rhodes
Gertrude (Rhodes) McArther McGinnis
Edmond "Ed" Rhodes
James Eli "Jimmie Rhodes
Charlie Rhodes
Violet (Rhodes) Turrentine
Lewis Rhodes
Dora (Rhodes) Berry
+ four other children who died as infants

This family moved often; this makes research difficult. It is known that
Alex lived in or near Tallahassee, FL; Waco, TX; Palmer, TX; Denton, TX;
Blue Ridge in Collin Co., TX; near Livingston in San Jacinto Co., TX; in
Montgomery Co., TX; in Oklahoma on more than one occasion; and in Paris,
Lamar Co., TX. When he was living in Montgomery Co., TX, he was listed on
the census as ALBERT RHODES.

I would love to hear from anyone having information about the ancestors
and/or descendants of this branch of the Rhodes family tree.
