I have a Jacob Rhodes born in 1802 in Pennsylvania(I don't
know where in Penn.). His wife's name was Mary ? . She was born
in 1812, also Pennsylvania. The first several of their children
were also born in Penn. but their last 2 children were born in Ohio,
Albert in 1850 and Charlotte in 1854, so I know they had to come to
Ohio between 1848 and 1850.
Jacob is buried in the Goodwin-Rhodes Burial Plot, Union Twp.,
Mercer County, Ohio, having died in 1878. Mary Ann, his wife, is buried
there also, having died in May 1900.
I've checked the wills and probate records in Mercer County,
and can find none for Jacob Rhodes. Can anyone tell me anything about
Jacob's parents, or where in Pennsylvania he was born or what his wife's
maiden name was. I seem to be at a "wall". There are many Jacob Rhodes'
in Pennsylvania, but I can't get any of the dates to correspond or else
they don't seem to go to Ohio. The daughter, Charlotte Rhodes, was my
great-grandmother.

An interesting aside: Thomas Roades (3rd generation) had a younger
brother William who was Estate Steward to Sir Edmund Verney of Claydon
House, and is written up in the 4 vol.'Verney Memoirs'. His wife,
Hannah Twigden is sister to Amphyllis Twigden who married the Rev.
Lawrence Washington of Sulgrave Manor -- ancestor to George Washington.
The mother of Hannah and Amphyllis (Anne Dyckons) is related through her
mother (Anne Thornton) to the Spencers of Badby, Northamptonshire --
(the family of the late Princess Diana).

They were found last on the 1870 census, Tallahatchie Co., MS with a 9-month
old son, whom I know to have been named John Richard Rhodes. At some point
they moved to Robertson Co., TX where my g-grandfather Columbus Rhodes was
born, supposedly around present day Bremond. There was a community called
Rhodes Chapel about 2-miles from Bremond. Only a poorly maintained remnant
of a cemetery exists today, which I hope to get some interest in cleaning
up.
No records have been found on 1880 TX census forward until 1910 when
Columbus and wife Mary Burleson Rhodes and sons are found in Limestone Co.,
TX. I've got family tree roots from dozens of my family, all going back to
England, but cannot seem to dig past Hiram and Eve , 1850.

in Shelby Co., Mo. He was in the California gold rush and returned to
Missouri after the rush. He supposedly found some gold. I am descended
through Jacob Martin and his second wife. Elzabeth S Miller. We believe
the spelling of the last name changed at this time by adding the "e".
David Newmyre (sp.) Rhoades, b. 3-5-1849, in Novelty, Mo., and died
1-5-1903 near Honeywell, Kan., after being injured working on railroad.
He married Louisa Anna Hitt 25-1868. They had 12 childdren and the oldest
was my grandfather, Jacob Lee Rhoades.
Jacob Lee Rhoades, b. 1-18-1870 in Novelty, Mo., and died 1-5-1955
in Cotton Co., Okla. He was a farmer/rancher. He married Ada Jane Bull in
Pattonsburg, Mo. They had 8 children. My father was Cecil Rhoades.
Cecil Rhoades b. 2-2-1905 in Cotton Co., Okla., and d. 9-28-1995
in Duncan, Okla. He married Mae Gore, b. 10-3-1914. He was farmer/rancher

(now Summit County), Ohio between 1836 and 1838. She died on 19 Feb 1872. She was
buried in White City Cemetery, Spencer Township, Dekalb County, Indiana.

He was married to Celestia Amanda WESTON (daughter of Francis WESTON and Amanda HINMAN)
on 20 Oct 1842 in Summit County, Ohio. Celestia Amanda WESTON was born on 11 Dec 1820
in Ohio. She died on 10 May 1901 in DeKalb County, Indiana. She was buried in White
City Cemetery, Spencer Township, Dekalb County, Indiana. Mathias RHOADS and Celestia
Amanda WESTON had the following children:

Catharine M. BOWMAN was born on 10 Apr 1847. She died on 14 Apr 1874. She is also
known as Kate or Katie. She was buried in White City Cemetery, Spencer Township,
Dekalb County, Indiana. Charles Albert RHOADS and Catharine M. BOWMAN had the following

Benjamin Judson Rhoads is too young to be married,
he's only 6!
Thomas Foster Rhoads was a good friend to Brigham Young, and was the man entrusted
to get the gold for the Mormon Temple in Salt Lake City, he also provided the gold
from his own mine in California for the first coins for the Mormon Church, and was
made treasurer of the church in 1852. He brought in over 60 pounds of gold from the
secret mines of the Spaniards. Those mines are now called The Lost Rhoads Mines,
because he never divulged where they were.
John Pierce Rhoads was married to Matilda Fanning and they had 10 Children.
Matilda died and he re-married and had about 7 more children. The second wife didn't
want much to do with the kids from the first marriage so she sent them to live in
Missouri with other relatives. John and his brother Daniel were credited with rescuing
the Donner Party. Daniel Rhoads' home and farm are designated California Historic Sites.
My great-great grandfather Matthew M. Rhoads is a mystery to the family.
I know that he took the family from Missouri back to California around 1874 and they
settled in Mendocino County. My great grandfather William Denham Rhoads was a
shoemaker/saddlemaker in Covelo, CA (Round Valley).
My grandfather Judson Melvin Rhoads was a park ranger in Yosemite, and then in
Yellowstone before his death in 1938. My father was born in Yellowstone, in December
of 1934 at the ranger station because they couldn't get out because the snow was so deep.
My father has just retired, he is an analytical chemist.
I am a first grade teacher in Fort Collins, CO. I was born in 1966 in Stockton, CA
but have been in Colorado for over 30 years so it's my home.
My son Benjamin was born in 1994, so we're doing our best to carry on the Rhoads
(without an 'e') name.

The ceremony which united Miss Mayme Rhodes, of Sommerset to Emanuel D.
Frye, of No. 414 Robb avenue, this city, was proformed at 3 p.m. Wednesday,
December 24, 1902, at the home of the brides parents,
Mr. and Mrs. Phillip Rhodes, by the Rev, Hershberger, of the Somerset
Evangelical Church, in the presence of a number of relatives and friends
of the contracting pair. Their attendents were Harry W. Barclay of
Johnstown, and Miss Hazel Burkett, of Somerset. Among the persons to
witness the ceremony were Mr. and Mrs. J. A. Custer, of No. 414 Robb
Avenue; Mrs Lowman Barclay, of Barclay Street, mother of the best man and
Miss Tross of Napolian Street. The bride and Groom came to the city
Wednesday evening over the Somerset & Cambria Branch and remained at
the Custer home in the Fifth Ward until yesterday morning, when they left
for Ligonier to spend their honeymoon. They bride is one of Somersets
estimable young ladies and quite popular in that place, while Mr. Frye
is an industrious young man of this city and holds a good position with

Mayme and her son Richard were given a double service in Ligonier. Mayme
who had been seriously ill for some time, passed away at home in Johnstown.
It was just days after the untimely death of her son Richard. They were
both buried in Ligonier Valley Cemetery .

Harrell spoke German and was the daughter of a Lutheran minister. Phebe married Henry
Harrell in Guilford Co NC on 25 Sept 1830. > The only info that I have found is a will

Here's my story of my Rhodes tie:
My 6th g-grandfather is Theodoty RHODES who lived in Westerly, Rhode Island from at
least 1696 until his death in 1733. He was a Justice and his name is found as perfroming
many weddings during this time. He served as one of the two Deputies for Westerly in
the General Assembly for the Colony of Rhode Island and Providence Plantation in 1721
and 1724.
According to his will which was executed in 1732 and proved in 1733, he had a wife,
Mary and four daughters: Dorcas (who married William HALL of Westerly), Amey (who
married Jeremiah CLARKE), Penelope (who married Thomas BURDICK) and Anne
(who married James BLIVEN).
I have not yet verified the identity of his wife Mary, although I've been told she was Mary
de VARS, from southern France, the widow of John de Vars. (She and John had a son,
Isaac VARS who named his son, Theodoty VARS, which supports this story.) I have also
been told that Mary is not the mother of the four girls.
So, I am looking for the wives and parents of Theodoty Rhodes - as I have as yet been
unable to connect him to any of the other Rhodes in Rhode Island at that time. Any and
all help is appreciated!
