Jacob Rode came to this country around 1851 from
Germany ( possibly Prussia area) and settled in
N.Y. state, in the Port Byron, Throop area. We
do not know his wife's name or if he had any other
children other than young Jacob Rode who was about
14 at the time of immigration.(Birthdate 22,Jan. 1837)
As young Jacob grew up he Married a Cynthia Saunders of
Port Byron area. They were married on 29, Aug. 1864,
and somewhere about this point Jacob changed his name
to Roth.
At some point Jacob fought in the Civil War with a N.Y.
Group. Later Jacob and Cynthia Moved to Rock Island,
Illinios Where they had 3 children Robert, Idea, and
Maggie. Idea and Maggie both died at an early age.
Jacob, Cynthia, and Robert then moved to Montcalm
County, Michigan
We would really appreciate any info from anyone who
could shed some more light on the New York Time or
before.

Jacob Rhoads b. abt. 1846 in Izard Co., Ark. d. unk.
*Descendents spell the name with an "e"

The Rhoads name of the family tree has been traced as far as Jacob
Rhoads, thought to have been born in Grayson Co., Ky. about 1800. This is
based upon a claim submitted to the U.S. Government by his son John Rhoads's
two children which listed his place and date of birth. Jacob's wife, Susan
Skaggs, was the daughter of Richard Skaggs (born abt.1781 in Washington Co.,
Virginia) the son of Aaron Skaggs and Sarah Lyons. Aaron was one of
the Skaggs brothers who since before the Revolutionary War had been "Long
Hunters" from east of the Applachians who had come into Kentucky to trap
during the winter and take furs back in the spring. Jacob's antecedents
may have been from the line of Henry Rhoads of Bedford Co., Pa. When a
general migration of them moved to Macoupin Co., Ill. in the 1830,
Jacob and Susan moved with them.
Henry Rhoads, Jr.'s brother who died in Muehlenberg Co.,
Kentucky in 1799 had three sons named Daniel, Jacob and John. A Jacob and
John Rhodes were listed on the 1810 & 1820 censuses. Jacob was listed as 45+
with two boys, while John was listed as between 16 to 20 with two boys listed
as 10 and under. In the 1828 Edmonson Co. Deed book, Aaron Skaggs, the
brother of Richard Skaggs sold a parcel of land to John Rhodes, and in 1836
sold another parcel to Daniel Rhodes. Daniel's daughter, Ruby Rhodes
married a Nicolas Roof in 1820.
In 1842, the son of Nicolas and Ruby, John Roof,
married Sally Skaggs, the daughter of James Skaggs, a brother of Richard
Skaggs. This would indicate the Rhoads (Rhodes) clan and the Skaggs clan had
dealings with each other. Whether any or all of the Daniel, Jacob, and John
Rhodes were connected with the Joseph Rhoads of Muhlenberg Co. is unknown.
Whether the Jacob Rhoads of Grayson county is connected to the John orJacob
Rhodes of Edmonson is likewise unknown.
In about 1836, Jacob and Susan left Macoupin Co., Ill. and moved to the
White River area in north central Arkansas where he purchased government land.
Jacob was listed in the census for 1840 with his family as being in Izard
County, Ark. When the census was taken in 1850, he and Susan had disappeared.
His son Thomas was present with his wife child, and several of the younger
children were listed with other families. Richard and John were not with
them. In 1860, all the children were in Izard County, but Jacob and Susan
were not. In 1854, in Pulaski Co., Mo. Richard Skaggs Will listed a Susan
Ravelle as an heir. It is not known if this referred to Susan Skaggs or not.
Nothing has been discovered about them since.

My great, great great grandmother was Margaret "Peggy" Rhodes, b. April 27, 1811.
She married Louis H. Hayles on January 7, 1836 - possibly in Alabama.
One of their children - the only one I've identified - was my great great grand father

I am just getting started on my Rhoades ancestry, and fortunately I
have been given much information from several sources to start with,
which I would like to share with others if interested. I would like

Jacob, 12, Ohio
Catherine, 10, Ohio

In the 1860 census, the Rhodes family is not shown but a Roth family appears
to be on the same land and the first names are very close to the same as the
Rhodes family. Anna Marie Roth is my ancestor. I am guessing that the Rhodes
family changed their name to Roth. Any help to confirm this and, assuming that
this guess is correct, to extend the Rhodes tree back in time would be much
appreciated.

Here is my short profile of my grandfather John Walter Rhodes.
All information is from relatives that knew him.
He was with his fathers traveling tent, who was the minister and his
sister who played the piano, he, grandfather led the music. He met
and married my grandmother Nora Salina Hines born 1898 in Texas,
I'm assuming West Texas. His mother was from a Cherokee Reservation in
Okla., they think, as when my uncle J.D. (John Delton) was about 10
someone came to the Hines family telling great grandfather that some
and had been left to John Walter Rhodes children. Great-grandfather
said that "none of them were going to have anything to do with any
Indian land and to forget it."
When grandmother died in 1924 grandfather took the three children,
J.D. born 1920 in Roby, Fisher Co., TX. Josie Mae born 1921 Roby
my mother), Renee' born 1924 in Roby, TX, grandfather took all the
children to one of his relatives home a long days ride from Campsprings,
TX. She was an old maid. She didn't like boys and was quite abusive to
uncle J.D. so grandfather picked them up placed each of them with 3
different Hines relatives. He then left for somewhere in south Texas,
they think, and remarried and possibly had another child or two then
died a few years later with dropsy of the knee.

Here is an outline of my Rhodes ancestors:

JOSEPH RHODES and his wife ELIZABETH lived in Carteret County, NC.
He bought land there in 1759 and 1766.
He died in 1789 and in his Will he mentioned his son JOHN and
daughter MARY WEEKS.
This daughter, MARY RHODES WEEKS, b. 1725, was the wife of
JABEZ WEEKS, SR and they were married about 1746 in Onslow County, NC.
They were the parents of nine children.

I would like to find more information about Joseph and his wife Elizabeth,
their parents, and also any siblings and perhaps their families.

29. WXQN00A@Prodigy.com (Merle E. Ray)

I am a descendant of Gabriel Rhoads through his daughter Magdalena
who married Michael Ray. I looked through your "Search" files and was
surprised to see that no mention has been made of two books by Marie
Leighty Engel (1) The Earliest Rhodes of Bedford, Blair, Huntindon,
Mifflin and Somerset Counties of Pennsylvania and (2) Henry Rhoads
Senr, Immigrant and his Earliest Descendants. I have information on a
large part of Henry's family including a couple generations of the
Isenharts. Which child of Johann Jacob and Susannah are you a
descendant of? It would appear that we are probably third or fourth
cousins. I am going to go thru my files and compare notes with the
information in the Search files. I would like to get the rest of the
Isenhart connection.

Hello, I am looking for information on my father's side of the family. My father was Joseph Patrick Dill Rhoades (1926-1994), his father was Horace Vaughan Rhoades (1892-1984), and the only other Rhoades I know of is my great grandfather Charles B (Breham) Rhoades (1862-1919). Dad was born in Delaware, Grandfather Horace in MD, and that is all I know. I always heard that my father was the only son of an only sons son. Ugh.
